All things in life are connected, when you throw away wastes they could end up in the air, water or land, polluting the environment for future generations. Pollution disrupts the balance of Mother Earth while endangering humans and animals and hurting community pride and economic development. The core of pollution prevention is reducing wastes in the first place, conserving natural resources, avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, and handling chemicals safely in order to prevent harmful wastes from polluting the Tribe's air, water and land resources.
The Morongo Pollution Prevention (P2) program promotes reuse and environmentally friendly purchasing to reduce wastes in the first place. Once the wastes are created, they must be disposed of properly. P2 works to first recycle to conserve natural resources, before sending materials to the landfill. The program manages a curbside Residential recycle program as well as a recycle program for the Tribal Administration Departments, Tribal Enterprises, and the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa. Through outreach and dedicated staff participation, the Tribe is diverting increasing amounts of their refuse to a Materials Recovery Facility. P2 program also manages recycling services for more stringently regulated and harmful wastes including electronic wastes, white goods, fluorescent lamps, oil and even vehicles. P2 also works to clean up illegal dumpsites and remove abandoned vehicles from the reservation while working to prevent future dumping.
P2 ensures all solid and hazardous wastes are disposed of properly and in compliance with applicable Federal and State laws. The Tribe must comply with the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) as well as California Code of Regulations because the Tribe's wastes are disposed of off the Reservation. P2 Hazardous Waste Management program focuses on ensuring Tribal Departments are handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous wastes properly through implementing a Reservation wide Hazardous Communications Program. P2 is also responsible for regulating underground storage tanks, storing hazardous substances and petroleum products including the
Community involvement is essential to the P2 program. Residents can help to prevent pollution by participating in community cleanup days, hazardous materials drop off days, the recycle program, and informational workshops offered by the Environmental Protection Department.
